A slender to stout, branched, erect, rather pubescent annual 15-50 cm high,

Flowers: 1.5-2.0 mm diam., in short, close spikes 10-12 mm wide; perianth lobes greenish-white, ovate, sparsely glandular; pedicels glandular; stamens about 6, equalling the perianth lobes, styles 2, almost free to the base.
Flowering UK: Late July-mid Oct.

Leaves: lanceolate, with acute apex and base and a somewhat undulate margin, ciliate and sometimes woolly beneath, often blotched with black [Leaf only occasionally with blackish dot. Yellowish glandular dots beneath]; stipules truncate, only the upper ones fringed; nodes swollen.

Fruit : 2-3 mm, tous lenticulaires à faces concaves, lisses et luisants.
